Pella Community Food Shelf

The Pella Community Food Shelf located at Peace Lutheran Church, 1000 E. Vermeer Road, Pella  is open each Tuesday evening (except for holidays) from 6:30 to 800 p.m. Anyone in the Pella Community School District in need of food assistance is encouraged to use this emergency food pantry. We also serve a few families outside the district that have been referred by the Department of Human Services or other service agencies.

Each week a family of one to four members may select food to fill a large grocery bag. Families of 5 to 8 members are entitled to 2 bags and those with 9 or more may receive 3 bags. The Food Shelf stocks basic food items such as canned goods, cereal, pastas, rice, powdered milk, frozen meat and that essential non-food item, toilet paper. In the summer we often have fresh produce donated by area gardeners. Each week Vander Ploeg Bakery gives us their day-old bread. Fareway delivers the weekly grocery order between 8 and 9 on Tuesday morning. At that time we also serve a limited number of families who cannot pick up groceries during our regular evening hours.

Once a month a family may also receive laundry soap, dish soap, shampoo, bar soap, and miscellaneous personal care items.

We often ask for volunteers. We need individuals to register recipients, to sack groceries, and to stock the shelves, for both the morning and evening shifts. We also need drivers with vans or trucks to pick up food from the Food Bank of Iowa once a month. If you would like to be added to our list of volunteers please contact Edie Oltmann at 641-620-8260.

If you have questions about the operation of the Food Shelf or would like a speaker for your organization, contact Melissa Zula, 641-628-8323.
