Debra Kinney

Debra Jayne Kinney was born on April 26, 1962, at Pella, Iowa. She was one of five children born to Orlo and Aleatha (Van Rheenen) De Bruin. Deb was united in marriage to Scott Kinney on September 19, 1992. They had just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary prior to Deb becoming ill. To this union a daughter, Leah Jo was born on July 14, 1998.

Deb graduated from Albia High School in 1980 and then attended Iowa Wesleyan College, where she graduated in 1984. Deb worked as a Physical Therapy Assistant for 30 years, the past 22 at Pella Regional Health Center where she was named Employee of the Year in 2016. It was in the Physical Therapy field that Deb found her greatest passion: caring for others, especially the elderly. She took extreme pride in getting folks moving again after a joint replacement or other aliment. She had a knack for being able to get patients to take “just one more step”. She brought her own special touch and healing hand to each one of her patients and their families.

Deb was diagnosed with colon cancer in May of 2015. She courageously fought and won that battle. However, this past September her cancer returned and this time God had other plans.

Spending time with family was Deb’s other passion. Most importantly her daughter Leah. Deb was very involved with Leah’s school, band, dance, and girl scouts. Deb and Leah went on trips to Europe and Savannah to celebrate her accomplishments in school and girl scouts. She loved to be at the family farm playing with the farm kittens, working on a puzzle, or helping with chores. She spent most of her time at family gatherings taking care of others, making sure everyone had what they needed. She loved making birthday cakes for her nieces and nephews. Deb also loved going to Grandpa Ivo’s in Arkansas every 4th of July.

Deb was most known for her kindness, her caring heart, putting others first, being a mom to all, the way she loved her family, her love of being active in her faith, gardening, baking, and reading, her beautiful smile, and her blue eyes. She loved to smile and you rarely ever saw a frown on her face. She continued to smile even though all the pain leading up to her final days. Deb’s deep faith in God supported her in her struggles and ultimately gave her peace.

She passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House surrounded by her family on Friday, December 8, 2017, at the age of 55 years.

Deb is survived by her husband Scott of Pella, and daughter Leah, currently at the University of Iowa; her parents Orlo and Aleatha De Bruin of Albia, IA; her siblings Doug and Sally De Bruin of Lewiston, ID, Stuart and Denise DeBruin of Albia, IA, Sandy and Craig Ries of Albia, IA, and Shaun and Brenda De Bruin of Pella, IA.
