Frank Davis Barnes Sr. of Pella, IA, formerly of Economy, PA, entered glory on January 17, 2018. Born on May 18, 1936, in the family farmhouse near Leeper, PA, Frank leaves behind his beloved wife, Loretta, two sons and their wives, eight grandchildren, and countless family members and friends whom he loved.

The third child of Robert R. Barnes Sr. and Martha (Jones) Barnes, Frank spent several years living at Neville Island, PA, before returning to the family farm in Leeper, where he graduated from North Clarion High School in 1955. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1956, serving aboard the USS Bennington, and received an honorable discharge in 1959.

Frank married Loretta Helen Pennington on April 14, 1962. Together, they built a home in Economy, PA, where they raised two sons: Frank Jr. and Douglas. After marriage, Frank worked at J & L Steel as a craneman and electrician before becoming an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 712. He retired in 1998.

Frank’s retirement years were spent helping friends and family members, camping with Loretta, and hunting at every opportunity. (Loretta patiently tolerated his stable of mounted trophies, including a caribou and a bear.) He deeply enjoyed meeting new people and learning about new things.

Frank also was committed to the work of the Gideons, delighting in the calling to distribute God’s Word broadly. He cherished his church families at Economy United Methodist Church, Fairmount Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and Covenant United Reformed Church in Pella.

Creative by nature, Frank delighted in designing and building things out of metal and wood. Through hours of work in his garage, he fabricated everything from a log turner for his campfires to a trailer and even an overhead crane. He loved building things that would be useful for his family.

In 2013, Frank and Loretta moved to Pella, IA, where they were warmly welcomed as part of Covenant United Reformed Church. There they cherished time spent with grandchildren and friends, right up until the day when the Lord called His servant home.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Ellen Brosius; brothers-in-law Leonard Conticello and Lorraine McCullough; and sister-in-law Dorothy Barnes.

Left to cherish Frank’s memory are his wife, Loretta; brother Robert R. Barnes Jr; sister Martha Conticello; sister-in-law Arlene McCullough; brother-in-law Kermit Brosius; his sons and their families; and many neices and nephews. The families of Frank’s sons include:

Frank D. Barnes Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of New Galilee, PA; their two children,William Sphar and his wife, Erin, and children Akira and Billy, and Megan Barnes; son, Rev. Douglas B. Barnes and wife, Grace, of Pella, IA; their six children, Michal, Samuel, Luke, Jacob, Joanna and Jesse Barnes.

“Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!”
