MAY 17 BOAT SAFETY: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plus U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary present the Iowa Boating Safety Course at the Lake Red Rock Visitor Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Boating knowledge, safety requirements and general rules of the road. Open to beginners as well as experienced boaters and fulfills the state’s boater education requirement for a person 12 up to18 years old. Pre-registration is required. MAY 22 CANDIDATES' FORUM: League of women Voters/KNIA/KLRS host 7 pm at the Pella Community Center. All the candidates running for contested positions for county supervisor (8), county sheriff (3) and state representive (3) are planning to attend. Each candidate will answer several questions. Citizens may help select the questions to be asked by contacting Dorothy Vande Kieft of Pella LWV at 628-8063 or KNIA/KLRS at 628-9494. There will be opportunity to ask additional questions after the formal part of the forum.The League encourages you to attend to find out where these candidates stand on issues important to Marion County.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: For Hershey's Track & Field Youth Program for children ages 9 to 14 on Saturday, May 24. MAY 29 STORYTELLER: The UI Alumni Asso. and the UI Faculty Engagement Corps will host A Story Swap, featuring storyteller Steve McGuire, 7:30 p.m., Graham Conference Center. Refreshments; free and open to the public. McGuire, a contemporary yet traditional storyteller, will share tales of living in Pella and the state of Iowa.

SOCCER TRYOUTS: Pella High Soccer Practice Field, 210 E. University Street, Pella. 4:30 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. for Pella Soccer Club to form U12 girls/ U12 boys premier soccer teams. MAY 30 TRAVEL PRESENTATION: Galerie of Pella, 725 Franklin Street, Pella. 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Iowa artist Sheryl Ellinwood has traveled to the southeastern countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. She returned to Iowa with gorgeous silver pieces that she found there, all hand-made by women in the hill tribe villages.
