Dr. Matt Gritters: Hospital Hero
Iowa Hospital Association Recognizes Those Who Show Exceptional Courage and Commitment

PELLA, Iowa—Dr. Matt Gritters, an Emergency Department physician at Pella Regional Health Center, has been selected as one of ten “Hospital Heroes” for 2010. He will be recognized at the Iowa Hospital Association’s Annual Meeting on October 7.

Dr. Gritters was selected for exceptional care given in the Emergency setting both in Pella and around the world. He’s known as a doctor of exceptional skill and a compassionate, kind and gentle manner. In his nomination, a colleague wrote, “…what makes him special is the feeling a patient, family member or staff member have when being cared for by him or working with him. He exudes a calm peacefulness in his demeanor and keenly listens and then reflectively responds. He offers encouragement and hope to all that are suffering and interjects the right amount of humor when appropriate…we have many instances in our Emergency Department where we say, ‘I’m glad Dr. Gritters was here to care for this one.’”

In addition to his work at Pella Regional, Dr. Gritters has cared for patients through medical mission work. His most recent trip was to Haiti in March to help care for those injured during the earthquake.

Dr. Gritters was nominated by his colleagues Pam Boat, RN, BSN; Carla Chow, BSN; Sherri Church, RN; and Joan Vande Krol, RN, BSN.

The Iowa Hospital Heroes Awards are given annually to hospital employees who show exceptional courage and commitment to their hospitals and communities. Employees are nominated by their fellow employees and those nominations are judged by another state hospital association. Since the awards began in 2007, recipients have included not only nurses and physicians, but groundskeepers, janitors and van drivers, all of them among the state’s 74,000 hospital employees.
