Seriously, does the Pella Police Department Weekly Report serve any public good besides giving those in church pews something to gossip about each Sunday? And, how come I never heard of public intoxication when I was a young adult, and all of a sudden police departments are going nuts arresting citizens for public intoxication. Whatever happened to the the days of civility? You know, like Sheriff Andy giving Otis the keys to a cell to sleep things off without reading him his Miranda rights and publicly humiliating him by putting his name in the paper. Listen, I've got nothing against cops... or churches for that matter. Wait...I lied...yes, I do...I detest both. Anyway, my points are still valid. Quit grinding salt into the wounds of people who perhaps made some wrong choices for an evening by making it a public spectacle. This isn't the Roman forum; we're a community. That, or get rid of some cops...and churches. --Emcee of Pella

Ed. note: The Police Report is a matter of public record. This is a local news site. If you don't want your name before the public in such a manner, don't perform the actions that get your name put there. MR

Why don't the Pella Public Schools close for Martin Luther King Day? I did call the administration number, listed for Pella Public Schools, and they said, of course, that school was open. When I asked why, they said, "I don't know". How about someone from the Pelladium delving into this? js

Romney rhetoric: Calling his caucus placement in first place by 8 votes a "win." That's margin of .0001 of one percent of the votes cast. Santorum is the big winner, like it or not. mr

Huge dandelions to all the political organizations that have been invading the privacy of Iowans through unceasing harrassing phone calls. I have never come so close to yanking out the land line. Last chance: If the Nov. 2012 election is like the caucuses, my phone is history. M. Racheter

About the recent note about Thai Basil's re-opening....... Those of us who are past Thai Basil fans know that each order is cooked individually AFTER it is ordered - phone in or dine in. That is what makes it such a great place to eat. If you want fast service and cheap prices, try the other oriental places in town -- if you want great food at a fair price, try Thai Basil. Slow down and smell the roses while you can. Thai Basil fan

Delighted to know that Thai Basil was reopening in Pella, my friend and I agreed to meet for lunch at 11:45. By 12:20 we still hadn't been served. When we finally were, the food was just as delicious as always, but they are going to lose business if they can't step it up. Coincidentally, the same day another friend tried to call in an order and the phone was so consistently busy he ate somewhere else. Just a bad day? mr

In reference to the little piece about the “forgotten” park at Bos Landen: We have a truly “forgotten” park at Brook Circle. Many, many children live on the circle and make use of that facility. Maybe there is a civic group that could give this park an update?? CV

During (our) the city's ownership of the power plant under construction, which we have recently sold for that "profit", didn't all of us electric customers pay rate increases each time more bonds were sold to pay our (the city's) share of construction costs?? Now, with that $ 9 million "windfall," shouldn't that be returned to the people who paid it, rather than be used to finance the present mayor/council's "wish list"? And how long have those of us who are NOT served by underground lines waited for this service be extended to us, after we helped pay for the service to be extended to everyone else?? Just a couple questions for consideration at the candidates' forum.... Still Waiting

The Pella Opera House is too small a venue to have amped up electronics of the sort playing during Pieta Brown's concert Friday night. It was ear shattering. I saw people removing their hearing aids. I saw people leave. It's hurtful to the audience, the venue, and the performers. cm

Murdered to Death, Central's theatre production currently playing at the Pella Opera House, is a riot. I don't know how they can deliver so many lines all evening long, listen to the audience burst into laughter, and not even crack a smile. Very professional and hysterically funny production. mr

Wah, wah, so the post office might go out of business? I doubt it. The government will continue to lynch the taxpayers to keep it going. Local post office currently hasa job posting on the counter, for $26/hour. Is it any wonder they're going broke? rm

The Fiske Guide to Colleges names the University of Iowa a "Best Buy" for the 7th year, and for the fifth year running, the UI is the only Big Ten school on the list. To RM-- If you are making less than $25,000 ($10/hour), you're not looking very hard for a better job. Vermeer and Pella Corp. are hiring...did you know that? You can get a welding job at Vermeer for much more than what you're making now if you have the gumption. Don't complain about public sector workers unless you've done their job... it's not a bed of roses. Branstad is a tool of the Right...nothing more, nothing less. I'm hoping Mike Gronstal runs for governor next.--mc hammer

I don't feel very sorry at all for a guy who's "only" making $73,000. It'd take me three years to come close to that. Time and again, studies have shown public sector workers are grossly overpaid compared to private sector workers. Paying someone to oversee the work of 12 people hardly seems worth $109,000. Branstad has his faults, but he was elected to get this state's financial house in order. Kudos for every step in that direction. rm

KNIA reports that “Palin To Appear At World Premier Of “The Undefeated” in Pella. Let the history books show that the collective IQ of Pella dropped significantly on that day. –from, No Sir, I am Not a Quitter - mc

Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, why did she have to walk into mine? Instead of "The Undefeated", her movie premiere could be titled "The Departed". President Obama in Davenport on Tuesday..same day as the Palin Premiere. Is she really that obvious? Besides, Sarah and Todd, who else would show up for this? Palin's "Lame stream Media?", as she refers to it? It just occurred to me that most elderly folks eat "supper" at 5PM in the "heartland". Pella Republican Faithful, get out your popcorn because this show is one you don’t want to miss! KNIA/KRLS reports, “County Republican Committee Busy as Candidates Court Marion County Voters.” Unfortunately, no sooner do the candidates open their mouths than their campaigns implode before their very eyes. Newt Gingrich dared to accuse fellow republican Paul Ryan of “right-wing social engineering” and the powers-to-be blew their collective gasket. POOF…campaign over. Michelle Bachman plays cat-and-mouse with the media for months and then sets-up Iowa as an apparent spring-board to announce her candidacy, and then at the last minute (with 100s of party faithful attending a $75/plate fundraiser in Des Moines) announces that she can’t make it. POOF…campaign gets a negative 10,000 points for dissing Iowa and most likely won’t recover. Ms. Marion County Republican Chairperson, we thank you for all this fine entertainment! Obama has very little to worry about…it doesn’t look like any Republican is going to last long enough to make the ballot. mc

Great job on getting the streets back in order so quickly, and in time for a weekend too. Don't we wish north Main would go as quickly! Now "Loyal Servant" can get to the liquor store quicker! mj

To think that Senate Democrats can speak with any credibility on the state budget is laughable. Senator Gronstal’s use of budget gimmickry created a $900 million dollar hole in state budget last year. In calling for a compromise, he is pushing for business as usual which Iowans rejected last November. Governor Branstad and Legislative Republicans are working on a transparent and common-sense budget and will not compromise our state’s fiscal future in order maintain Senate Democrats appetite for deficit spending. I encourage Iowans to call Senator Gronstal at 515-281-3901 and tell him to drop the gimmicks and to get serious about the state's budget. Matt Strawn

According to a headline on your website, Gov. Branstad is serious about education in Iowa. Wonder why he chose a Lt. Gov. who does NOT have a college degree? Make no mistake about it: it is precisely BECAUSE of labor unions that I, in the private sector, have lower wages, fewer benefits, and less vacation, and I still have steadfastly refused all my life to join any union. They have served a very useful purpose in this country and no longer do so. Human rights abuses can be and should be enforced by the rule of law. Unions remind me so much of government itself anymore: organizations corrupted by their own power and influence, demanding money and demanding absolute obedience, all of which, historically, is destructive. One very small example: an electrical union worker in Des Moines forks 40% of his paycheck over to his union for "benefits." jm

I am thankful for the solidarity of the Democrat leadership in the Wisconsin legislature for forcing their dictatorial governor to come to the table with Labor. He has ABSOLUTELY no right to unilaterally take away the bargaining rights of Labor. I love that tens of thousands of educators, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants continue to occupy the state house until the governor comes to his senses. The silver lining with this situation is that this governor has ignited a resurgence in union organizing and interest throughout the United States. It may not be relevant in Pella because our great manufacturers treat their employees fairly; however, they are an exception. Without organized Labor, you would have lower wages, fewer benefits, rampant child labor, inhumane working hours, no vacations, etc. Thank you Scott Walker for reunifying Labor.---

Progressively Informed

This debate is not about the value of public employees, but rather giving the taxpayers a seat at the table in public union negotiation. For too long, the taxpayers have been absent in one-sided bargaining that has inflated the state's budget and created a public class whose wages and benefits outpace those competing in the private sector...ms

A huge bouquet of dandelions, smelly ones at that, to every one of those Wisconsin legislators who ducked a vote. That is an inexcusable breach of contract with the legislators' constitutents, for whom they agreed to do a job, and every one of them should immediately lose that position of responsibility for acting so irresponsibly. T OR D? I tend to agree with 91-year-old poet and activist Lawrence Ferlinghetti: "I am waiting for them to prove that God is really American." I'm guessing that Congressman Steven King is probably working on such a piece of legislation as we speak.--Enlightened in Marion County

Sen. Harkin continues to display a blatant disregard for his constituents and our system of representative government by putting the interests of Washington lobbyists before those he represents. (Harkin met with 400 Washington lobbyists to strategize on how to fend off congressional Republicans’ proposed spending reductions.) Matt Strawn

Iowa’s Democrat Senator Tom Harkin has voted against the full repeal of health care reform. The House of Representatives – including Republicans Tom Latham and Steve King – voted to repeal the legislation last month. Senator Harkin would be well served to invest more time in Iowa listening to his constituents. If he did, he would learn the majority of Iowans are opposed to Obamacare. The law is not only unconstitutional but stands in direct contradiction to the message sent by voters in November’s election who want less government intrusion into personal health care decisions. His commitment to defend this legislation is yet another reminder he stands with his liberal leadership in Washington instead of those he represents. ms

I think it is sad the actions of a very unstable individual get blamed on the rhetoric of any politician, radio host or television personality. If you can't come up with anything better than that, maybe you should listen more than you talk in this conversation. Let's talk about the Iowa House making provisions to help citizens with mental health issues. Quote from Kraig Paulson: The Taxpayers First Act as it passed committee saves Iowa taxpayers over a half a billion dollars in addition to setting aside $327 million in tax relief. The bill also provides $25 million to support un-funded state commitment to remove Iowans from wait lists for mental health services – a core responsibility the state must deliver to Iowans in need of service. That's news! Carole Vannoy

Here's some evidence for Mr./Ms. 50219 of the hateful, dangerous rhetoric from the Right that manifested itself as a massacre in Tucson :

”I’m thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I’m wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. … No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out.” —Glenn Beck, May 17, 2005

”If Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we’re not going to do anything about it. We’re going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.”’ —FOX News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly, after San Francisco voted to ban military recruiters from city schools, Nov. 8, 2005

Hey, Also from 50219,
That’s what I call “Right” good entertainment. 50219

To Another from 50219: Your quotes are sophomorically humorous, but not quite as effective as rifle crosshairs on publicly elected officials names.—From Better Luck Next Time

The charge that the Tucson massacre is a consequence of the “climate of hate” created by Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, Glenn Beck, Obamacare opponents, and sundry other liberal targets is reckless, scurrilous, and unsupported by evidence. The irony — or maybe it’s just good old-fashioned hypocrisy — is that while the Left stridently bewails “the culture of hate,” their own rhetoric is much more intemperate than that of their opponents:

“I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”
“Don’t you think we’re not keeping score, brother?”
“Bring it on”
“Get ready for hand-to-hand combat with your fellow Americans”
“I want all Americans to get in each others’ faces!”
“You bring a knife to a fight pal, we’ll bring a gun”
“Republicans are our enemies”
“Hit back twice as hard.”
“We talk to these business folks… so I know whose ass to kick. “
Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat”
“It’s time to fight for it.”
Spoken to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”
“I’m itching for a fight.”
“They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back”

Who's the hateful loudmouth that spewed these statements? Why, our very own President, Mr. Obama. - Another from 50219

Nonsense Palin, Rush and Beck are very entertaining. I don't like them but they didn’t cause bad things to happen. Prescription drugs do. 50219

"To not see the corrosive and dangerous outcomes of thirty years of venom, demonization, and vilification by right-wing demagogues is to veil ourselves in comforting and opaque cocoons of White privilege and superior social status. It won’t happen to us we think; but it is happening here." Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Michelle Malkin, Sarah Palin, and Ann Coulter are all culpable for the recent assassinations in Tucson. No, they didn't pull the trigger, but they gave an individual who is probably insane a target to aim his gun at because of their relentless, hateful, destructive rhetoric. These people are tearing this society apart...no question about it.--Tired of these Hateful Loudmouths.

Does anybody else feel that Congressman Steve King (5th District) is an embarrassment to our state? Since he gets re-elected term after term in his district, there's little hope that we'll see him booted out of office any time soon. Our only hope is that since the state is going from five districts to four, that he will be ousted by some means with a bit of clever gerrymandering. Our state can do better.--Tired of the King

For your dandelions and tulips I'm submitting a mixed bouquet to the chamber. Tulips for scheduling a new event. Dandelions for calling it the first annual one. There can never be a first annual event because it doesn't become annual until it's held a second time. "Picky in Pella"

Tulips to Senator McKinley for sharing his religious views in his Dec. 3 memo. To Pella Wiseman/Woman: Remember, here in America we have “FREEDOM OF RELIGION” meaning every American (including elected officials) is free to practice and speak about his or her religion. There is no such thing as “FREEDOM FROM RELIGION”, obligating every American (including elected officials) to censor our religious views and opinions from the public. – God Bless America

Dandelions to "Pella Wiseman/woman," who either isn't living in the real world or simply enjoys goading people. (We personally thinks it's both.) Since only 6% of all Iowans are non-Christian (94% are Christian; 13% were non-religious; 5% didn't respond, according to the most recent stats I could find on religion in Iowa) McKinley is simply addressing remarks to the vast majority of his constituents, which is totally appropriate. Moreover McKinley transitioned the Christmas comment (1/7 of his letter) to talking about politics (6/7) of the letter; thus our comment that "Pella Wiseman/woman" is other than the name proclaims, and is just intent on picking an argument - further substantiated by his claim that this is a secular country, thus exposing his complete lack of knowledge about the founding of this country...Non-religious and not offended

I found Paul McKinley’s (State Senator, 36th District) comments in his Dec. 3 Memos very unsettling. As an elected state official, he said “Christmas is more than just Santa, presents under the tree and bargains at the local downtown store. It’s about the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.” If he wants to evangelize as a private citizen to in a letter to the editor, that’s fine. But as an elected official, he has absolutely no right to do so to a citizenry that is not only Christian, but also Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, Wiccan, Agnostic, Atheist, etc., etc. I have seen a bumper sticker around town that says “Freedom is the distance between Church and State.” Senator McKinley would be well advised to remember that this is a secular nation and that he is off base to bring any religious discourse into a message from an elected official. Shame on him.—Pella Wiseman/woman

Ok, it was just a thought - I love my owners so much, they fulfill all my needs except one and that is my urge to run around without a leash. Unfortunately in Pella I must be leashed even in the green space unless it’s fenced. Glad you like the wide open green space. Lassie 120110

A Big Rainbow Bouquet of Tulips!!! Hurrah for PHS junior Alexandra Martin for taking a stand and starting a gay straight alliance at PHS school. I am almost speachless in amazement because one of our Pella students is brave enough to start such a great support group for all our GLBT students and their allies. There have been so many GLBT students who have struggled and been harrassed in our schools. It is time to let those students know they are not alone, there are may other students just like them and even more Pella allies who support them. Over the years there have been hundreds or even thousands of Pella School alumnus who had to hide their true identities while attendeding PHS and PCHS. It is important that future generations know they don't need to follow in the footsteps of former students for fear of being persecuted. They can express themselves to be who they really are. We support you! You are on the path to equality! Lowell Olivier-Shaw , PCHS Class of '83 113010

Dear Lassie, Why is it that just because you think the green space is ugly, it automatically is ugly. Perhaps other people, such as I, think that having an undisturbed green space looks quite nice. As a matter of fact I have thought many times since the pool has been moved how nice that wide open green space looks. I am not a city planner but I estimate that if the city were to actually put in the improvements that you are proposing, they may very well be looking at a tab of close to $100,000. I personally don't think that in the economic times that we are in spending that kind of money is something the majority of Pella tax payers would be interested in. Why can't it be used as a dog park in the state that it currently is in? I thought the idea of a dog park was to have a place for dogs to run. JM 112910

Ugly wasted green space: Is there some reason that the area where the original outdoor pool used to be hasn’t been turned into a dog park? Seems to me with a few trees, minimal landscaping, a faucet and a fence…maybe some benches this location could once again look attractive and serve a purpose. Just a thought, Lassie 112710

Tulips to Chuck Grassley and Bill Northey. Whatever you think of their politics, they were the only two candidates we noticed who did not run smarmy attack ads during this election cycle. Dandelions and plenty of them to all those candidates who chose the low road. About all they accomplished was giving the rest of us plenty of opportunity to use the bathroom. Who listened more than once to any of them! mgm 110210

Another bouquet of Tulips to all in this election who take the time to study beyond the rhetoric being spewed in all of the advertisements. In answer to Mr.Corum's concern with Mr. Zauns "anger", I can't help but question which is better for our country...someone who openly admits to some poor judgment a number of years ago, or...someone who today is using his enormous war chest of funds to spread mud and untruths in an effort to detract from his own questionable Congressional record? Perhaps it is time that some of those people in Washington do start using a little anger in an effort to get something positive done. 2010 Hopeful

"Vote No" to remove judges on Iowa's Supreme Court is only secondarily an issue of gay rights. It is primarily an issue of whether or not judges should be retained for creating law (thus the term "activist judges") instead of interpreting actions brought before them according to the laws already on the books. The law says (Iowa Coe 595.2) that "Only a marriage between a male and a female is valid." If you disagree with the law, you work to change it the law. It is the responsibility of judges to render decisions based on the law, not on the law as they wish it to be. When a judge arbitrarily makes judgements contrary to law, he becomes a law breaker. To "Vote No" is to send an unmistakable message to these judges that Iowans believe in the rule of law even when the judges do not. Moreover, the fact that judges come up for a retenation vote at all (Article V, Sec. 16) is indicative that it is the duty and responsibility of Iowans to hold their judges accountable for their actions. People who distort the issue into name-calling (homophobic, Puritan in the pejorative sense) are adding fuel to the fire. It is unfortunate that this is the volatile issue over which Judge Hanson chose to create law, when it is his disregard for the laws he is to sworn to uphold for which he should be held accountable. mgm 101210

I have an anger management problem? Brad Zaun, is that you playing peek-a-boo with me? Even if it were true in my case, I'm not representing the great State of Iowa...Brad Zaun is. It shows your true colors in being homophobic and (sadly and misguidingly) pushing to restrict the rights of 5-10% of the US population. It is disturbing that you wish to not to allow loving same-sex couples to marry because of your Puritan views on life. The progressives' have their antennae up and will be listening in the pews of your churches to see if your fair pastors use their pulpits to discuss how to vote on this matter. But, I have to ask, are your children old enough to watch these PG/R rated movies...you know, when their cognitive skills are so developed that they can process thoughts critically and independently? If no, you should surely wait to show them these videos until they have matured. If yes, good for you. You have proven that you are a mature adult, that you have raised your children well, and you are confident that they will make the right choices without being brainwashed by silly videos meant to indoctrinate defenseless minds to accept gods that are based on coercion rather than informed decision.

--A Proud Father and Happy Un-Reformed Citizen of Pella

Disgusted Pella Secularist: I totally agree. That's why I sit my young kids down to watch The Hangover (in real life they're gonna drink and party...they might as well learn how to do it right at an early age when they're easily indoctrinated!); Knocked Up (in real life they're gonna have extramarital sex...they might as well learn how to handle it right at an early age when they're easily indoctrinated); Sicko (in real life they're gonna get screwed by the medical profession...they might as well learn how to handle it right at an early age when they're easily indoctrinated), etc. etc. etc. etc. Nah, I'll sit them down to watch Veggies Tales, any time! Great Pella Mom

The Veggie Tale cartoons (currently featured at a local church and bookstore) are nothing more than Christian propaganda aimed at indoctrinating vulnerable kids at an early age before they're capable of critical and informed thought.--Disgusted Pella Secularist

Well, as to be expected, the finger pointing has already started concerning the tragic drownings this past week. According to the Des Moines Register article, the City of Pella was well aware that the lights were not working...they had a four-year-long lawsuit about this matter concerning the lights' installation. My first question to City Administrators and the Mayor, "Knowing this as you did, why did you allow the pool to be rented after-hours (i.e., when the waters are dark and lifeguards cannot see underwater)? This doesn't bode well for the City nor the Mayor.--Mike of Pellal

According to headlines on KNIA's website: "Daniel Jay Kading of Knoxville pled guilty to possession of marijuana following his arrest on April 8th." Big freaking deal. What a waste of our taxpayers' money and law enforcement's time. Hopefully, during the coming years we will get smart and decriminalize the possession of pot in Iowa. It is truly a shame for something made by mother earth which has been proven to be medicinal in many ways for millions of Americans; neither harmful nor addictive counter to those 1960's films you were brainwashed with in high school. Keep an eye on what happens in California this year and keep your fingers crossed.--Pella Progressive

Two young souls were lost last night at the city pool. Very sad. Where was the supervision and the life guards? What responsibility does Central College, Pella City government, and the Central Western Iowa Des Moines Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes have to the families of these young people? This should not have happened. The mayor of Pella and the president of Central need to answer some questions.--Mike of Pella

Tulips and Dandelions to the City of Pella for the fireworks display in the city of Pella. BUT……Dandelions to them for waiting until 10:00 o’clock to start the program while parents try to quiet the tired, whining, crying children as they wait in anticipation! It is completely dark by 9:30……..let’s get the show on the road!...Pella Mom

I like Mike!
A bouquet of tulips for him! Welcoming gal in Pella

To the state of Iowa: why create a law only to enforce it for an entire year with "warnings"? We don't get our hand slapped for speeding or seatbelts, but text while you drive and we'll send you on your way. What a waste of government energy and taxpayer dollars. aw

(Depending on your point of view) Man-oh-man. Not a good couple of weeks for governor wannabe Bob Vander Plaats. First, he has his lunch handed to him by former governor Terry Branstad in the Republican primaries. And then, Branstad had the good sense to distance himself from theocrat Bob by choosing Kim Reynolds as his lieutenant governor. Now there's talk that Dobsonesque Bob may run for governor as an independent. You can be sure that the Culver camp is salivating over the prospect of this happening. Nothing like splitting the conservative base to assure a Democratic victory this fall. Go for it, Bob.--Pella Democrat

A dandelion to the city of Pella for discriminating against non-residents when it comes to their programs. Their rationale is that if you don't live in city limits, you're not paying taxes for these things. That's bull. I own four rental properties within city limits and I still don't qualify. I live three miles outside of town, and I am within the city's zoning range. They can put an airport on my property (which almost happened) without my say-so. They can annex me with my [not] being able to do anything about it. Yet I still pay non-resident rates for things like the pool, which is substandard compared to so many within a 50-mile radius. I have a feeling if this was challenged in court, it wouldn't hold up.

To oblivious in the waiting room of Pella Motors. The next time you enter a room and see four others quietly reading the books they've brought with them, please reconsider asking an employee to turn on the TV just for you. - No fan of Fox news.

I voted because I feel like the very future of our country depends on each citizen making their voice heard. I still believe in the constitution and limited government so I showed up to vote for candidates that shared my beliefs. -- Carole

Thank god Vander Plaats was defeated…she was looking out for us. Go Branstad!—Pella Democrat

A large bouquet of tulips for those who intelligently debate issues while at the same time, treating those with differing views with respect and understanding.. Your intelligence and humility is obvious and appreciated by all Respectfully Hopeful 051710

A large bouquet of dandelions to those who can not accept that there are several sides to many issues and resort to insults, name calling, and in general, a total lack of respect toward anyone with whom they disagree. Your intelligence (or lack thereof) is obvious to all. Respectfully Hopeful 051710

Unfortunately, your Tulips/Dandelions item has turned into trading pubic insults from two opposing viewpoints - neither of which 99% of the people in the community give a crap about reading or even giving them the light of day. Those two should shut up already -- enough !! - the Phantom, 041510

Mike (AKA persona non grata) sure has a lot of strong opinions for someone who is self-declarative “above the rest of us” with his warm and welcoming openness to all cultures and beliefs. I wonder why condemnation of conservative beliefs is any different than condemnation of “brown people with unusual accents?” How is it possible for someone to call a certain group “heartless, selfish, angry, and bitter” while proclaiming themselves compassionate and redemptive? Maybe we need to look at who is not thinking clearly on this issue. But I understand . . . to be condemning and angry at people who hold conservative views suggests a person who listens too much to his own little voices in his head.

Please don’t be angry at the conservatives who founded and uphold this fine community, as they are the ones who own many of the fine businesses who employ the servers in downtown that you yourself may frequent.

Such frivolous conversation is not worth the time or effort in argument. Alas, I must work to pay for healthcare for myself and others, mortgages for myself and others, utilities for myself and others, childcare and schooling for myself and others . . . you know – the things that hard working, responsible people must pay for themselves without any help from the government. Shall we talk about reverse discrimination? From "If you don’t like it here, don’t stay here!" 051210

In response to "If you don't like it here, don't stay here."-- Yes, Iowa City is a wonderful town. But it would be boring to be around too many people who think like me. I rather enjoy Pella where I can agitate people such as yourself who sound fairly shallow. I'm surprised that you didn't come out and say, "I think all brown people with unusual accents should move to Mexico where they would feel more at home." In other words, you feel whoever does not conform to conservative, small town standards and who does not look and behave like you should get out of Dodge...persona non grata. Well, you can't get rid of people like me that easily...I plan to be around for many years to come, Allah/Buddha/Zeus willing, in order to get you to come around to my way (the enlightened way) of thinking.--Mike from Pella (not Iowa City). 051210

Tulips to Calvary Church for their wonderful free shuttle service during Tulip Time! Wouldn’t it be great if more of the out-lying churches in Pella offered the same? What a relief to parking congestion this would be! AE, 051110

I think “Mike from Pella” should move to Iowa City, (he would then be “Mike from Iowa City”) where he would feel more at home. He might even be able to get a visit from his idol, Mr. Obama ! From- if you don’t like it here, don’t stay here! 050710

It's graduation time again and if I hear one more person say I GRADUATED high school I will scream. All of us who completed our education somewhere GRADUATED FROM that institution. The institution graduates "x" number of students, but the student never graduates the high school or college. - an old grad, 043010

Come on, conservatives. You've been too silent since Health Care Reform was successfully passed; you have to agree that was a great day in American history. Now, let's talk about the abominable law that Arizona's governor signed that allows scary brown people to be stopped by The Law asking them for Their Papers...not unlike what happened in Nazi Germany with the Jews don't you think? This is a sad day in American history that will certainly set back the Republican party in mid-term elections and hopefully the next presidential election. I predict Obama will be have a free pass.--Mike from Pella, 043010

Further personal insults about my intellect and character are unnecessary and unwarranted, 'Mike'. I'll state once AGAIN, it is against America's best interest for the government to enslave its citizens. -Member of the angry mob

To the Member of the Angry Mob: To be angry and to be a member of a mob suggests a person who listens to too much Rush and Glenn Beck. But I understand…I assume you uphold the principles of the Tea Partiers…a very angry and bitter minor slice of America. Thank you Democrats and progressives for holding yourself above the angry mob mentality and for passing laws that help the less privileged in our society. That’s what makes us a great country. Member of Angry Mob, please don’t be angry for paying a few shekels to help your fellow citizens. You know, the ones who wait on you for you meals at the Windmill Cafe, who serve you coffee at Smokey Row, who gives you your $40 pedicure at Topaz. Please don’t be angry that a few more dollars of your income helps these low wage earners have health care. Don’t be angry…feel compassion and redemption and perhaps a little happiness for being a good citizen.--Mike

Personal insults about my intellect are unnecessary and unwarranted, 'Mike'. I'll state once again, it is against America's best interest for the government to enslave its citizens. -Member of the angry mob

To the “member of the angry mob”—when one is angry, emotion overtakes reason and intellect. That seems to be the mantra of the Tea Party and it’s unfortunate that your anger doesn’t allow you to think more clearly. Thank you Democrats for providing health care to 30-million more Americans not as privileged as those covered by employers’ programs. Health care coverage should be a right for ALL citizens of this country…not a privilege.—Mike

Yes, thank you Democrats for enslaving more Americans to the Government. -- Member of the 'angry mob'

I stand corrected. Not only are people who oppose health care for those who can't afford it selfish, but Ms. Vannoy's letter to the editor proves that they are rather heartless as well. Thank you Democrats for making us better.--Mike

I am thankful for the Democrat's leadership. We will be a better country because of the passage of the Health Care Reform act. Those who oppose it are simply selfish. - Mike
