Central Iowa Taco John’s Raises Over $63,000 in Partnership to Fight Cancer

Des Moines, Iowa —On Monday January 23 the President of the Taco John’s Des Moines Co-op presented a check to the Iowa Region/Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society at the Taco John’s at 2600 Ingersoll Avenue, Des Moines.

Once again, Central Iowa Taco John’s restaurants joined together in raising funds for the American Cancer Society (ACS) through the annual sale of Christmas ornaments. During the month of December, customers were asked if they would like to purchase the paper ornaments as a donation to benefit the American Cancer Society in support of its mission – to fund lifesaving research and treatment, quality of life services, education and advocacy efforts.

The ornament sales fundraiser is part of the Taco John’s Des Moines Co-op’s broader support of the ACS in which a portion of sales of its Nachos Navidad® is donated to benefit the American Cancer Society’s work including its signature Relay for Life® events.

Relay for Life® is the American Cancer Society’s signature event that celebrates those who have survived cancer, remembers those who’ve lost the battle, and pledges to continue the fight against the disease. More than 24,000 people participated in nearly 90 Relay for Life® events held in the state of Iowa in 2011. In the past five years the Taco John’s Des Moines Co-op has raised $63,534 for the American Cancer Society.

“The Iowa Region of the American Cancer Society is truly appreciative of its long term partnership with our participating Taco John’s restaurants,” says Laura Miller, Community Relations for Polk and Jasper Counties in Iowa, Midwest Division of the ACS. “The $19,534 they raised during the 2011 Holiday Season alone translates to support for 13 of our annual Relay for Life events this year and subsequently over $1 million in income to the ACS fight against cancer.”

“Taco John’s has always had a hometown relationship with our customers,” said Jeff Brands, president of the Taco John’s Des Moines Co-op. “We are pleased to partner with them in this effort in our local communities in Iowa and to raise support for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.”

Members of the Taco John’s Des Moines Co-Op include restaurants in Ames, Altoona, Ankeny, Boone, Des Moines, West Des Moines, Boone, Pella, Urbandale, Carroll, Creston, Fort Dodge, Grinnell, Indianola, Marshalltown, Newton and Oskaloosa.
