Slow offensive night dooms Dutch women’s basketball team
DUBUQUE — A tie game after the first quarter quickly got out-of-hand for the Central College women’s basketball team in an 80-51 loss to Loras College Wednesday night.
Central (9-13 overall, 2-11 Iowa Conference) and Loras (14-8 overall, 8-5 Iowa Conference) were tied at 12 after the first period however, the Kohawks exploded for 68 points over the final three periods.
“We started the game well ending the first quarter tied,” said coach Chelsea Petersen. “Loras changed up defenses in the second quarter and we struggled to adjust offensively.”
The Dutch were led by junior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) with 17 points, including five 3-pointers and sophomore forward Claire Marburger (Perry) added 14 points, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line and six rebounds.
“Emily Dine shot the ball well from the perimeter tonight,” said Petersen.
Loras controlled the glass 41-31 and outshot Central 49.5 percent shooting to 34.5 percent shooting from the field.
“Offensively and defensively we had periods of play where we executed extremely well,” said Petersen. “Unfortunately, it was not consistent over the full 40 minutes.”
Central hosts Iowa Conference rival Simpson College Saturday for a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the women beginning at 2 p.m. at Kuyper Gym. Saturday is Senior Day for the Dutch basketball programs. Simpson won the first matchup with Central 73-65 January 18 at Simpson.
“We have a great opportunity to play at home and look to get back in the win column Saturday against Simpson,” said Petersen.
