Double-digit lead slips away from Central men’s basketball team
DUBUQUE — The Central College men’s basketball team squandered a 14-point second half lead in an 82-71 loss to Iowa Conference foe Loras College Wednesday.
Central (12-10 overall, 6-7 conference) held a commanding 63-49 lead in the second half but the Kohawks responded with a 33-8 run to overtake the Dutch. Loras turned Central over 21 times.
“Tonight was a tough one,” said coach Craig Douma. “Turnovers cost us the game.”
Senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) led the Dutch with 22 points and seven rebounds, senior forward Austin Glawe (Aurelia, Sioux Central HS) scored a season-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers with four rebounds and senior forward Ryan Kunkel (Solon) had a near statistical double-double corralling 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Dutch controlled the rebound battle 41-34 but the Kohawks outshot Central 46.4 percent shooting to 45.8 percent shooting from the field.
“We rebounded well enough to win tonight,” said Douma. “We only scored on three of our final 30 possessions. You aren’t going to win games doing that.”
Central hosts league rival Simpson College Saturday for a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the men beginning at 4 p.m. at Kuyper Gym. Saturday is Senior Day for the Dutch basketball programs. Simpson won the first matchup with Central 64-63 January 18 at Simpson.
“We’re really looking forward to celebrating this senior class on Saturday,” said Douma. “This class has won a lot of games and set the bar extremely high for the rest of the program.”
